First and foremost, we have to look at this argument for defunding planned parenthood from the eyes of a female who may not have access to affordable healthcare often aimed at finding and protecting against STI’s. It’s extremely difficult to look at this as a middle class male and have an informed opinion. A man can walk into any clinic and get a test, while a female cannot. Planned parenthood is an affordable organization aiming to helping women and keeping them safe and healthy. They are not a crazy ‘abort all the babies’ clinic. The argument against Planned Parenthood is essentially saying that no organization involved in abortions should get public funds for anything it does. Because you disagree with one offered service, the entire clinic should be defunded? This one thing offered from a clinic cancels everything out, no matter what they do or what they offer, they should be defunded. But, most of what Planned Parenthood does isn’t even about abortions. It’s affiliates provide about 10 million services a year: 4.4 million tests and treatments related to sexually transmitted diseases, 3.5 million birth-control services, 1 million pregnancy tests, 500,000 breast exams, 378,000 pap tests, and 327,000 abortions. That makes abortions about 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s work. (see source)
They provide many necessary services to women aside from abortion. Affordable birth control, testing for STDs, cancer screening healthcare in general, and sex education. These are necessities provided to women, who otherwise wouldn’t have access to them, at little to no cost by Planned Parenthood. In fact, they don’t even use federal funds for abortions.
After I wrote this I stared at my computer for about fifteen minutes noticing how short this blog is. Over such a sensitive topic, there should be more to say, right? It should be complex, worth pages of facts and opinions. It should be confusing as heck and I shouldn’t have been able to sum everything up so quickly. But no, it really is this simple.
Disclaimer: I am not a expert on this subject by any means. Although I have done some research, enough to form a valid and informed opinion. This blog post is not a “pro-choice” or “pro-abortion” blog, I do not even touch on my thoughts on that, but it is instead about defunding a clinic. The goal of this is not to start fights or offend, but do my own research and form an opinion and share my two cents on my blog.
