School just started. I know this isn’t news to you, and the reminder probably is making you grumble and roll your eyes. Just know that you’re waking up early and trudging to class for a reason. You may forget what that reason is, especially after a professor shows up with a pop quiz or tells you your first exam is next week, I mean come one, we just started. But try to remind yourself why you’re there. Whether it’s high school or college, you’re learning and you have this opportunity that so many people will never have.
Take advantage of the resources given to you. Used books, bus schedules, coffee. Drink that coffee. Continue reading →
I’m sure you know this, but Christmas is tomorrow. Christmas is my favorite time of year, for a lot of different reasons. The food, family, Jesus, atmosphere, games, weather, and, of course, you. I’m sure it is your favorite time of year as well. Although, definitely your busiest.
You know, I never thought about this, but you probably don’t get enough thank you’s. Yeah, you get plenty of appreciation and publicity, but mainly people use you, don’t they? Parents use you to get their kids to behave and their kids use you to satisfy their selfishness. Businesses use you to get money and media uses you to be seen. Continue reading →
Remember when I went through that whole stage where pretty much anything you did was stupid? I didn’t want to dance in the kitchen with you or make cookies or jump on the trampoline? Yeah, I’m really sorry about that. If I could go back and answer, “Do you want to put on some music and bake with me?” with “HECK YES, MOMMY!” I totally would.
For a while there I took you extremely for granted, and I still do even though I don’t want to. Sure, some things come with growing up but I hit fast-forward when I should have hit pause. I’m sorry for rolling my eyes. I’m sorry for ignoring your simple questions or not putting away that last dish. I’m sorry I forgot for a little bit that you’re my best friend.
Your craft is so important. It is difficult and it is an art. We are so appreciative of it. Don’t let anyone tell you what you do is not important. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s easy or you’re not good enough or it will mean nothing. Because none of that is true. It means so much to us. Your work helps us get through hard times in our lives. It lets us know we are not alone. It entertains us and helps pass the time. It helps our imagination grow. It takes us to new worlds. It helps us see over the fence. It helps us fly and fight evil and live an epic romance or save the world. You put our thoughts on paper. You help us connect with people we may never meet. You make us smile, laugh, cry and yell. You build friendships and bring together families. You’re art is so important.
STOP. You don’t need to pass me, I’m already going ten over! Get. Off. My. Butt. Why are you so impatient? GEEZ! Calm the freak down. This is not a race, goodness gracious. You need to learn how to slow down and enjoy life!
Dear other driver, life isn’t slowing down just for you to stop and smell the dandelions! CAN WE GO NOW?! Why are we getting on the highway going forty freaking miles an hour? GOOOO. You’re not getting any younger! OH. MY. GOSH. Can we not? Go faster, please! oh finally you’re going to the other lane. USE YOUR BLINKER, IDIOT. You know, the little signal built in to let me and other drivers know you may be turning or switching lanes? Yeah, it’s there for a reason! Isn’t it a cool little invention? USE IT. You’re supposed to be “the light” not “the Facebook political advocate for things that will invalidate groups of people and turn them away from the gospel”. Be gracious, generous, loving and accepting.
Stop fighting among yourselves. No you are not doing Christianity “right” because you’re Baptist or Church of Christ or protestant or catholic or non-denom. You are just doing it one way. Everyone works differently. Everyone praises differently. While one person may thrive in having freedom to move around and raise hands and dance, another may feel overwhelmed and turned away. Contrarily, while one my feel stifled by structure, another may feel safe and at home. Help your fellow sisters and brothers find where they fit and stop yelling that your way is the only way and the “correct” way. It’s just ONE way. We are supposed to be one whole family, not a bunch of small ones that are constantly fighting. Love each other and build each other up. Continue reading →
I don’t know if you realize how much I actually love you. I mean, you probably get it, seeing as I hold you hostage for cuddles daily and will gladly pet you whenever you want it. But still, you’re not human (shocker, right?) so I don’t know for certain you feel the same love that us homo-sapiens do. I know you love me, I mean, let’s be honest, I’m the best owner ever (except that one time I forgot to feed you… sorry about that again) but do you really get it? Continue reading →
